Building My Own Arcade System

August 12th, 2007 · No Comments

Have you ever had that really geeky moment in your life where you decided to do something very technical and didn’t really have a clue what you were about to get yourself into? Well I had that very moment this past week and decided after reading a recent article in Linux Journal, that I would embark on building my own stand up arcade system, using Linux. With nothing more than the magazine which I read the article in, I started out to my garage to salvage some spare parts from my very own computer bone yard. To make it clear here what I’m doing, I’m attempting to build my own arcade system, like the ones you played as a kid in the mall, wasting your allowance to be the best guy in the town at Street Fighter. Street Fighter isn’t the only game, I want to build a system that plays more than one game, kinda like the Neo-Geo.
Anyway, heres what I gathered up to start the process:

  • Spare 17″ monitor
  • Old Pentium III computer with 512 Mb of memory and a 40 gig harddrive. The HD is probably overkill for just a gaming system, but I have other plans as well.
  • Ubuntu 6.06 LTS - Live CD. The reason I went with Ubuntu is because I’m familiar with it and I had the CD handy. As I find out later, it’s actually pretty handy because some of the stuff I want to install comes in .deb packages.
  • Standard Keyboard, USB mouse and speakers.

Since this is a pretty lengthy process, I’m going to divide my accomplishments into days. As it’s going to take me a few of them to get this whole thing up and running. Each and every day I’m going to be working on this project, so there will be new info every day. I PROMISE!!!

In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions at any particular step.
