Starting a new project with Django

March 26th, 2008 · No Comments

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I’m not much for dressing up and rarely wear anything but T-Shirts. Thus it would probably be no surprise that a few years ago I started my own screen printing company. During this time I had a somewhat odd passion for collecting quotes that I thought would look great on T-Shirts. Ok, so your asking “What does this have to do with Django?”. Trust me, I’m getting there. Well once upon a time I created a site called www.cynic-tees.com and posted a few shirts here and there, and basically used the site to test out different web design tactics. During that process I even sold a few shirts and made a few bucks off of adsense. So it was more or less a wash. But now I’ve gotten re-energized and decided to give it a try for one full year. So here’s what I’m planning to do with www.cynic-tees.com.
First and foremost I’m going to build www.cynic-tees.com with Django. In addition to using Django, I’m going to use blueprintcss to start off with a solid css framework. My initial plan is to have one post a day, or rather a “Cynical Shirt of the Day”. I have saved enough content to not have to duplicate anything for well over a year. So I plan to phase out the development of the site and will include the following features.

  • A blog that features a shirt of the day. More importantly it will be the “Cynical Saying of the Day” or something of that nature.
  • Shopping cart feature using PayPal.
  • RSS Feeds
  • Allow for user registration
  • Implement some sort of voting or rating function
  • Track the most accessed and highest rated post (shirt)
  • Create an Archive
  • Create a contact page, along with the other necessary pages needed.

So for the first phase I’m going to concentrate on the blog, and the shirt models. Once I get that up and running I’ll worry about the rest of the fun stuff. However, the one thing I’m committed to doing is creating a post a day.

So here’s to creating another website with Django and seeing if it’s possible to make any money.
